Trastevere Relais

Hotel Silva
In the leafy Nomentana district, an easy bus ride and a not so difficult walk from the historic center, the hotel offers charming accomodations at a very reasonable price. Friends who have stayed there enjoyed the home-like atmosphere in a converted turn-of-the century palazzo, and the pretty courtyard. There is no elevator, but you'll feel cozy in one of the 13 nicely decorated rooms, complete with minibar, air-conditioning, Internet and safe-deposit box, and there's a bar-restaurant on the premises. Small dogs are permitted.

Hotel Capri
The proprietors of the Hotel Silva also operate a nine-room hotel conveniently located near the Stazione Termini, with less charm, but the same comfort and low prices. Some singles, with shared baths, are ony €35 per night in the low season, and doubles with private bath start at €60.

Hotel Navona
This small hotel gives travelers the experience of staying in a 15th century palace, in one of the best areas in Rome, just adjacent to the Piazza Navona, and a five minute walk to the Pantheon. The palace has been restored by its owner, your host, who is a descendant of aristocratic Italian families and an architect. It's an excellent value for the location. The decor in the rooms ranges from cozy to spare, but it's an excellent value for the location.

Residenza Zanardelli
With the same owners as the Hotel Navona, the Zanardelli is an intimate seven-room, four-star residence, occupying what would have been the noble floor of a 19th century palace designed in the sumptious Baocchetto Romano style. The rooms have been recently restored, without losing their historic charm, and many of them look out onto the beautiful Palazzo Altemps. Hotel Forte

The Via Margutta is one of our favorite streets in Rome, quiet and tree-lined, just steps from the Piazza del Popolo and the Piazza di Spagna. It occupies a floor in an old palazzo, with only a handful of guest rooms. Rooms are comfortably decorated and immaculate. Hallways are spacious, with sitting areas, limited room service and a cleaning service are available. Relais Le Clarisse
On the site of an ex-convent, the rooms of this little hotel open out onto a courtyard. The rooms are all spacious, some of them actually quite large, and they are all equipped with plasma tv, Jacuzzi tub or shower and wifi. Just opened in the past year, the hotel has been very tastefully decorated, with an airy feeling in all the rooms, wrought iron bed frames, bleached wood floors and lots of light. We've booked several friends here with excellent results. Located in Trastevere, the heart of Rome's nightlife and an easy walk across the bridge to all of the historic center's attractions. Hotel Parlamento
This unassuming little family-run hotel on the top two floors of a sixteenth-century palazzo has two major selling points: the location, just near the Spanish Steps, and the lovely roof garden. Another small and family-run hotel, with a great location between the Spanish Steps and the Trevi Fountain. Hotel Teatro di Pompeo

Just off the Campo de' Fiori, built on on the remains of the ancient Roman Pompey's Theatre dating back to the year 55 B.C., a simple but comfortable budget hotel, with a nice little lobby bar. Breakfast is served in a very atmospheric underground room with the original Roman walls. You'll feel like you're in a cave. There is a small three-room annex just down the street. Some of the rooms have the old beamed wooden ceilings, and all offer air-conditioning, minibar, radio and TV and telephone.

Villa della Fonte Guest House
Barely visible from the street, you'll have to look for the name on the buzzer, but you are only a few feet away from the magnificent Piazza di Santa Maria in Trastevere. It's tiny, just five rooms up a narrow staircase, but always booked long in advance because of the great quality for the price. Simple and elegant, with clean, airy rooms and a lovely rooftop terrace. Have a glass of wine in the public room before going out in the evening. It's a secret gem. Many former convents now provide affordable lodging for the budget traveler, offering accommodations from the spartan to the luxurious.

Santa Brigida
The 14th century Swedish saint, Santa Brigida (1303-1373) lived and died here. The nuns, with their identifiable iconography of little crowns of crossed white bands topping their black habits are known for their friendliness and welcome guests from all religious creeds. The rooms, each with private bath and pleasantly decorated with antiques. No TV. Hand-crafted images of the Madonna hang over most beds. This is one of the most charming and well-kept convent guest houses in Rome's historic center, with a charming roof garden overlooking Piazza Farnese near Campo de'Fiori. The adjacent chapel is a must visit. Book well in advance. About €100.

Casa San Giuseppe
Run by the sisters, this clean and comfortable 25 room hotel in the heart of Trastevere is a favorite of visitors to the Vatican, but it's a steal of a deal for any traveler. Very friendly and helpful with an English-speaking front desk. Starting at about €100.

Casa Per Ferie Santa Maria alle Fornaci

This religious guesthouse just a stone's throw from St. Peter's Basilica is spartan but clean, comfortable and inexpensive. The history of the monastery dates to 1198 when its founder, Padre Giovanni Matha, member of the order of Trinitarian monks decided to establish place of hospitality to offset the military mindset that had descended on the city in the wake of two Crusades. Istituto Immacolata Concezione Nostra Signore di Lourdes

Run by a group of mostly elderly nuns, the feeling is very old world and unpretentious. Don't expect much more than clean rooms, as renovation has not been a budget priority. Little English is and if you're a late-nighter, the convent's 10:30 curfew could pose a problem. But the location, just at the top of the Spanish Steps, is unbeatable. Cash requested upon arrival. Villa Domus Sessoriana Hotel
Located within the monastery complex of Santa Croce in Gerusalemme , stone's throw from the Basilica San Giovanni in Laterano, the hotel is a great value for the price. Like many monasteries, Villa Domus traces its history to the middle ages.
