The Best in Rome

Rome Shopping:
ENGLISH LANGUAGE BOOKSTORES

Almost Corner Bookstore
Dermot O’Connell has made his cozy shop a neighborhood destination. Drop in to browse and have a chat.

Anglo-American Bookstore
In Rome for more than 25 years, with an inventory of more than 45,000 books, the shop is a great source for art and architecture titles, classics, new fiction and history. A separate address down the street specializes in books on science and technology.

Scientific/Technical Section at Via delle Vite, 27 tel. 06. 678 9657 Closed Monday morning and Sunday

Feltrinelli
The Feltrinelli’s have nearly taken over book buying in Rome, with several stores throughout the city. This one has extensive selections of books and CDs, a pleasant café on the second floor where you can enjoy a view of the Largo Argentina with your cappuccino and cornetto. A ticket office services the city's main attractions. There’s a small section with books in English and Spanish, including a fairly comprehensive collection of Rome guide books and maps.
Largo Argentina, 6 tel 06 6893121 (Largo Argentina)

Feltrinelli International
Feltrinelli opened a large international section in its flagship Piazza Exedra shop in 1996, offering a wide selection of English-language books on a variety of topics: literature, art, health, self help, gardening, religion.
Via V.E. Orlando, 84/86 tel 06 482 7878 (Piazza Exedra near Piazza della Republica)

Libreria del Cinema

As its name suggests, this shop is dedicated to film, selling books and DVDs, mostly in Italian, with the odd English title. You can find special issues of Variety and other English-language industry publications here. The café-bar is a congenial hang out for film buffs and professionals.
Via dei Fienaroli, 31/d tel. 06.581 7724 (Trastsevere)

Libreria del Viaggiatore
Shadowy, narrow and crammed with maps and travel books, many of them available in English, this is the place to shop for guidebooks on Rome or wherever you may be heading. You can find vintage editions, coffee table books, and rare volumes as well as the latest books on food and travel.
Via del Pellegrino, 78 tel. 06.68801048 (near Campo de’ Fiori)

Lion Bookshop
Established in 1947, the Lion is the oldest English bookstore in Rome. Its friendly and peaceful atmosphere makes it a comfortable place to spend a quiet hour. The inventory of over 30,000 titles in English includes sections for literature, art, cuisine and photography, books on Rome and Italy, and texts related to teaching English as a second language. The children’s corner is designed to make reading fun. The shop’s café offers tea, coffee and pastries.
Via dei Greci, 33/36 tel 06 326 54007 (near Piazza del Popolo)

Mel Books
The selection of English-language books is limited, but this spacious shop has a great atmosphere. Apart from fiction, non-fiction and the classic literature selection for students, there are books of interest on Itaian culture.
Via Nazionale, 254 tel 06 488 5405 (near Piazza della Repubblica)

Open Door Bookshop
This tiny shop sells new and used books in English, as well as Italian, German, French and Spanish. It has all the atmosphere of an old fashioned bookseller, including a shelf of worn volumes outside the door and a cat sleeping in the window. You can find English films on video and sell the books you've already read.
Vial della Lungaretta 23 tel 06 589 6478 (Trastevere)

Santa Susanna Library
Run by volunteers from Rome's English-language Catholic church, the library boasts more than 20,000 volumes in English, including a good selection of current novels, books about Rome and Italy, and a children's section.
