ust across the river from Trastevere, Testaccio still maintains much of its old working class flavor. But it has gotten dangerously chic in the past few years, largely due to the plethora of night spots that have opened there along with a sprinkling of new restaurants and shops. The via Monte Testaccio, which is lined with nightclubs, was built on a mountain of ancient Roman pottery shards, amphora from the days when the vessels were discarded after use. And nearby, in Largo Dino Frisulloat the edge of the Tiber river, a new art complex has taken the place of the historic butchering plant, the ex-Mattatoio. Now the home of MACRO, a modern art museum, the space also houses a music school, and La Città dell'Altra Economia, a store and café selling organic products. The centerpiece of the neighborhood remains the historic open air market, one of the last in the city and soon to be replaced by a modern building. Look for it mornings, Monday-Saturday near the piazza Santa Maria Liberatrice.
